“We are in a laundromat in Fredericton”, me escriben en un e-mail los integrantes del grupo Women, “estamos en una lavandería en Fredericton”. Me hubiera parecido raro que una banda de noise y rock de los ´50 estuviera frente a una pantalla escribiéndome un correo electrónico y que esa pantalla esté en un lugar lleno de lavarropas, pero viniendo de Women nada es extraño, o mejor dicho, todo. Es normal que sean inusuales. El nombre de la banda oriunda de Canadá significa “Mujeres”, pero todos los integrantes son hombres, grabaron su disco en ghettoblasters (grabadores doble cassettera) y máquinas de cinta abierta. Fueron producidos por Chad Van Gaalen, el increíble multiinstrumentista y animador del que ya hablé en un post el año pasado y quien además es el dueño de los aparatos que utilizaron. ¿Algo más fuera de lo común?, el vocalista dice que grabó un tema cantando en una alcantarilla en la nieve al lado de un río congelado. ¡Todo sea por lograr un buen sonido!
El disco lleva el nombre del grupo y saldrá el 8 de julio por el sello Flamish Eye. Pat Flegel y Chris Reimer contestaron estas preguntas especialmente para Les Paradis Artificiels, ¡desde la lavandería!
¿Por qué se llama Women una banda de hombres?
Sí, ¡es irónico!. La verdad es que no pudimos pensar otro nombre para la banda y espero que nunca más tengamos que buscar uno. Blood Test Marathon, Yoga Pants Butt, Chentril Bront, D.B Prevlin y Los Angeles Stories estuvieron también en contienda.
¿Por qué piensan que el noise y el pop de los ´50 son compatibles?
Mezclarlos fue una casualidad, pero se balancearon muy bien uno al otro y eso mantuvo al disco con un sonido fresco. Esos son los estilos que hemos venido experimentando y tiene sentido mezclar las cosas que nos gustan.
¿Cómo podrían describir la participación de Chad Van Gaalen en el disco?
Él tiene un montón de equipo que pudimos usar y tiene mucha paciencia y nos dejó probar todo lo que quisimos. Él se aseguró de que estuviéramos felices con el producto final, buscó estar seguro de que todos los involucrados en la grabación estuviéramos contentos. Hay un montón de partes que la gente podría no reconocer donde Chad está tocando saxofón, Theremin, sintetizador, pandereta y otros instrumentos. Hubo también una situación en la que me vi obligado a cantar en la nieve en una alcantarilla al lado de un río congelado.
¿Han escuchado música argentina?
No puedo creer que ninguno de nosotros tuvo la oportunidad, pero siempre disfrutamos escuchando cosas que nunca oímos antes.

Why does to call “Women” a band of men?
Yes it is ironic! The truth is we didn’t put any thought into the band name and that we hope we never have to name another band again. Blood Test Marathon, Yoga Pants Butt, Chentril Bront and D.B Prevlin and the Los Angeles Stories were also in contention.
Why did you think that noise and the ´50 pop sound are compatibles?
It kind of just happened that way, but they do balance each other
nicely, and keep the record sounding fresh. Those are the styles we
have been experimenting with the most, and it just kind of makes sense
to meld the things we like together.
How can you describe the Chad VanGaalen participation in the record?
He had a lot of nice equipment that we were able to use, and he was patient and let us try anything we wanted. He also made sure that we were happy with the final product, he wanted to be sure everyone involved was happy with it. There are alot of parts that people might not recognize where Chad is playing Saxophone, Theremin, synth, tambourine etc. There was also a situation where i was forced to sing in the snow into a culvert beside a frozen river.
Have you listened argentinian music?
I don’t believe any of us has had the opportunity, but we do enjoy
listening to things we have never heard before.
